Natural muscle at any age: discipline, not shortcuts

No peptides, no injections. How I build muscle at 51: progressive strength, real food, rest and consistency.

Every week someone asks me what I take. Whether I inject something, whether I use peptides, whether there’s a trick. The answer is always the same: no. I’m 51 and everything you see is training, real food, rest and discipline. Nothing else.

I’m not saying it to show off. I’m saying it because we’re surrounded by shortcuts promising fast muscle and youth in a bottle, and most people end up frustrated, spending money or putting their health at risk. Real muscle, the kind that stays with you for years, is built another way. And it’s simpler than you think, though not easier.

How to build muscle naturally

Muscle grows when you ask it for a little more than it’s used to giving. That’s the whole secret: stimulus, recovery and repeat. After 40, on top of that, we lose muscle mass every year if we do nothing, so strength training isn’t about looks: it’s health and it’s longevity.

  • Strength, always. Two or three sessions a week working the whole body: squats, pushes, pulls, hip hinges. With real weight, not decorative dumbbells.
  • Progression. A little more every week: one more rep, one more kilo, better technique. If you always do the same thing, your body has no reason to change.
  • Not just strength. In my method I combine strength with flexibility, cardio and HIIT. A strong body also has to move well, breathe well and have a fit heart.
  • Technique before ego. Lifting heavy with poor technique is the shortest route to injury. And an injury can stop you for months.

What to eat and what not to

You can train perfectly, but if you don’t eat well, the muscle won’t come. The good news: you don’t need any miracle diet.

What to eat

  • Protein at every meal. Eggs, fish, meat, legumes, natural yoghurt. As a guide, between 1.6 and 2 grams per kilo of body weight per day if you do strength training.
  • Vegetables and fruit every day, in many colours. Fibre, vitamins and antioxidants to recover better.
  • Good fats: extra virgin olive oil, avocado, nuts, oily fish.
  • Quality carbs around your training: rice, potatoes, oats, fruit. They’re your energy to perform.
  • Water. Much more than you think.

What to avoid

  • Ultra-processed food, pastries and added sugar.
  • Alcohol: it slows recovery, worsens sleep and shows on your skin.
  • Extreme diets: eating too little makes you lose exactly the muscle you want to gain.

And before taking any supplement, check with a professional. I come from the pharmacy world and I’m very clear about it: food first, then, if needed, everything else.

Strong, active and with good skin, for good

Staying in shape isn’t about one summer. It’s what you do most days, for years. This is what works for me:

  • Sleep well. Seven or eight hours. Sleep is when muscle repairs and skin regenerates.
  • Protect yourself from the sun. Sunscreen every day. It’s the best anti-ageing there is.
  • Move every day, even on rest days: walk, take the stairs, stretch.
  • Manage stress. Chronic stress eats away at your muscle, your rest and your skin.
  • Consistency over perfection. One bad day ruins nothing. Giving up does.

Muscle is also your best ally for ageing well: it gives you strength, protects your joints and bones, improves your metabolism and changes how you move and how you look. That’s why, when people ask my age, they often don’t believe it.

No shortcuts, but not alone

You don’t need peptides, injections or magic formulas. You need a plan that makes sense for you, someone to guide you and the commitment to follow it. The rest will come.
